In the first part of a two-part article, the actual performance of survivor and nonsurvivor samples is analyzed. The empirical evidence suggests that survival is associated with performance but that performance is not necessarily associated with survival. As a result, ignoring survival issues in the selection of managed futures programs may result in reduced performance. In the follow-up article in the next issue, actual models of survival potential are discussed and presented.
